I took a photo of their group, showed them how I would photograph them and talk with them as if we were on a real shoot. Then I handed the camera over (yikes!) and let them take over. The only thing I helped them with was posing ideas if they needed some (which they did mostly on their own) and fixing the exposure when the photo was "too dark" or "too bright".
